Peoria Animal HospitalWe look forward to serving you.

Night Watch - Do you have someone on all night?

No. The Doctor checks on hospitalized animals in the evening if needed. If more intense monitoring is required, we refer the patient to the Emergency Animal Clinic.

Pet Food - Do you sell pet food?

Yes, we sell Hills Prescription Diets.

Pet Sale - Do you sell pets?

No. We do not recommend pet shops either. It is best to go to a private party or breeder. These are found in the want ads or out of our breeder directory.

Avian (birds) - Do you take care of birds?

Yes, but the Doctor is not a bird specialist. On routine problems that deal with smaller birds, we will try to help you. We do nail trims, wing clipping, and beak trims on parakeets, cockatiel, and other small birds. For any major treatment or for larger birds, we refer to Camelwest Animal Hospital.

Visa - Do you take credit cards?

Yes. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

House Calls - Does the Doctor make house calls?

The Doctor makes some house calls by special appointment only.

Fleas - How can I get rid of fleas?

We have several over the counter products that a technician can talk to you about depending on the problem and your household situation.

Lifespan - How long do dogs, cats, ferrets, or rabbits live?

The bigger the dog, the shorter the life span.

  • Small dogs: 14 - 16 years
  • Medium dogs: 12 - 15 years
  • Big dogs: 10 - 12 years
  • Cats: 14 - 16 years
  • Ferrets and Rabbits: 3 - 12 years
Cat Heat - How long is a cat in heat?

Off and on for 1 - 2 months in spring and fall, 1 - 2 weeks on, then 1 - 2 weeks off. We recommend spaying.

Pregnant - How long is a dog or cat pregnant?

All are 63 days, plus or minus 3 days.

Spay - How old do they have to be to be spayed?

6 months is the minimum age requirement to spay dogs or cats. We don't feel that it is necessary to wait for them to have a litter or to have a heat period. Research shows that it doesn't matter on gaining weight, nor does it affect the pet's personality. After surgery, the Doctor sews them up with special dissolving stitches, all on the inside. There is no need to remove them. It takes 7 - 10 days for the skin to heal. We usually have to keep the pet overnight, but some people prefer to take them home the same night, this is okay.

Bathing - How soon can I bathe my pet?

It is okay to bathe the pet after their first vaccination at 6 - 8 weeks old. Use proper shampoo that we carry, if possible. Bathe as little as once per month when possible. It is very dry here in Arizona, and too frequent bathing tends to dry the skin and hair coat. It is best not to use shampoo for people, as the pH is different and may be too harsh for your pet's skin and coat.
